What is Bokashi Bran and how does it work?

Bokashi Bran is an organic compost activator made from wheat bran, sawdust, molasses, and EM-1 Effective Microorganisms. It uses fermentation to break down all kitchen waste — including meat, dairy, and cooked food — without odour, producing nutrient-rich pre-compost and Bokashi tea liquid fertiliser.

Can I put meat, dairy, and cooked food in a Bokashi bin?

Yes. Unlike traditional compost bins and worm farms, Bokashi can process meat, fish, dairy, cooked leftovers, bread, citrus, and small bones.

How much Bokashi Bran do I use?

Use 1–2 tablespoons per 1–2 cm layer of food scraps. A 2.5KG bag typically lasts 2–4 months for a standard household.

How long does Bokashi composting take?

Fermentation takes 2–4 weeks in the bin, then a further 2–4 weeks once buried in the garden. Bokashi tea can be used immediately, diluted 1:100 with water.

Will my Bokashi bin smell?

A healthy bin has a mild pickled or vinegary smell. Foul odours indicate improper sealing or too little bran. White fluffy mould is normal; black or green mould is not.

Is Bokashi Bran safe for organic gardening?
