Help your garden bounce back from heat, drought and transplant shock
Aloe vera survives harsh sun and long dry spells because it is built for stress. Our Fermented Aloe Vera Extract brings that toughness to your garden. We grow the aloe ourselves on Tamborine Mountain with no sprays, then ferment the whole leaf with EM-1 Effective Microorganisms and organic blackstrap molasses. The result is a living tonic that helps plants cope with tough conditions, settle in after planting, and recover faster when the weather turns against them.
It is also the team player of our FPE range. Aloe's natural saponins help sprays spread across leaves and help water soak into dry potting mix. Add a splash to any of our other extracts and they cover better too.
What's working inside the bottle
Salicylic acid Stress response
Plants use salicylic acid as a signal to switch on their own defences against heat, drought and disease. Aloe is a natural source of it.
Aloe polysaccharides Hydration
The long-chain sugars that make aloe gel so slippery hold moisture and give soil microbes something to feed on.
Natural saponins Spreader
These lower water's surface tension, so sprays coat waxy leaves instead of beading off, and drenches soak into dry, water-repellent mix.
Amino acids & growth compounds Roots
Aloe naturally contains amino acids and gibberellins. Gardeners have long used it to help cuttings and new transplants put down roots.
EM-1 Effective Microorganisms Living microbes
Lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and phototrophic bacteria pre-digest the aloe and carry on working in your soil, crowding out problem microbes.
Volcanic-soil minerals Minerals
Aloe is naturally rich in calcium. Ours draws minerals from Tamborine Mountain's red basalt soil.
What you'll notice
- Plants that hold up better through heatwaves and dry spells, and perk up faster afterwards
- Seedlings and transplants that settle in with less wilting and sulking
- Cuttings that are ready to pot on sooner
- Foliar sprays that sheet evenly across leaves instead of running off
- Dry, crusty potting mix that wets up properly again
- Healthier, livelier soil over time as the EM-1 microbes settle in
The science: why aloe for stressed plants?
Aloe vera gel contains a mix of compounds that matter to plants: polysaccharides, amino acids, vitamins, gibberellins and salicylic acid. Studies on stem cuttings of plants such as tea, grapes and pothos have found aloe gel can support root formation, in some trials performing close to commercial rooting hormone. Salicylic acid is one of the main signals plants use to manage stress and disease, which is why aloe is valued as a recovery tonic.
Fermenting the aloe with EM-1 breaks the tough leaf down into a liquid your plants can use straight away, and adds a living community of beneficial microbes that fresh aloe gel doesn't have.
Where Aloe fits in our FPE range
Our other extracts mainly feed your plants. Aloe helps them cope, and helps the others work better.
| Extract | Main job | Reach for it when… |
|---|---|---|
| Aloe Vera | Stress recovery, rooting & spreading | Heatwaves, dry spells, transplanting, cuttings, or to boost any other spray |
| Seaweed (Bull Kelp) | Root hormones & cold recovery | Seedlings and new plantings, or after frost |
| Comfrey | Potassium for flowers & fruit | Tomatoes, strawberries and citrus are setting fruit |
| Pumpkin | Nitrogen & enzymes for leafy growth | You want lush, green leaves on greens and herbs |
| Insect Frass | Soil inoculant & plant immunity | You're building soil life and pest resistance |
Tip: Aloe pairs with everything. Add 20mL per 10L to any of our FPE foliar mixes to help it spread and stick.
How to use
This is a concentrate. Shake well and always dilute in water before use. Apply weekly during the growing season and fortnightly in cooler months, in the early morning or late afternoon so the microbes aren't hit by harsh sun. If you're using tap water, let it stand for a few hours first so the chlorine can escape.
| 60mL / 10L | Foliar spray – Mist leaves until they're evenly wet. |
| 100–200mL / 10L | Soil drench – Water in at the base of plants. Suits garden beds, lawns and houseplants. Use the higher rate when planting out, repotting, or after a heatwave. |
| 20mL / 1L | Cutting soak – Stand the base of fresh cuttings in the mix for 10–15 minutes before potting up. |
| 20mL / 10L | Spreader booster – Add to any other FPE or foliar mix to help it coat leaves evenly. |
Storage & safety
- Store in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate.
- Shelf life: up to 3 months.
- This is a living product. The bottle may swell slightly as the microbes work. Open the cap at least once a week to release any gas.
- Expect an earthy, pickled smell. That's the lactic acid bacteria, the same family found in yoghurt and kombucha. It fades once diluted and watered in.
Keep away from pets and children. We ferment the whole aloe leaf, which contains natural compounds (including aloin) that are toxic to cats and dogs if swallowed. Store the concentrate securely, don't leave mixed solution where pets can drink it, and keep pets off freshly sprayed plants until the leaves are dry. Not for human consumption.
