Some gifts sit in a cupboard. This one grows on your kitchen bench and feeds you dinner.
The Oyster Oasis Tabletop Mushroom Farm is four fully colonised gourmet oyster blocks, a mushroom book of your choice, and everything you need to start harvesting at home — no soil, no garden, no experience required. The blocks arrive already grown through with mycelium, so there's no waiting weeks for something to happen. You open the bag, mist twice a day, and mushrooms appear.
We pack two seasonal line-ups, because oyster varieties fruit best at different temperatures. You'll receive the pack that suits the time of year your order ships — matched to Australian conditions so your blocks fruit instead of stalling.
What you'll be growing
Summer Pack — dispatched September to April
Phoenix Oyster Pleurotus pulmonarius
Slim tan-grey fans on pale stems; mild and savoury with a faint sweetness and tender bite.
-
Pink Oyster Pleurotus djamor
Vivid salmon-pink ruffled clusters; bold and meaty, crisping to a smoky, bacon-like finish. -
Snow White Oyster Pleurotus ostreatus
Pure white velvety fans; delicate and mild with a soft, seafood-sweet edge. -
Yellow Oyster Pleurotus citrinopileatus
Bright marigold rosettes; nutty and lightly tangy, turning cashew-crisp in a hot pan.
Winter Pack — dispatched May to August
-
Blue Shimeji Pleurotus ostreatus
Dense clusters of small steel-blue caps on slender white stems; firm and nutty, sweetening as it browns. -
Chocolate Oyster Pleurotus ostreatus
Deep cocoa-brown fans with cream gills; rich and savoury with the meatiest texture of the oysters. -
Silver Shimeji Pleurotus ostreatus
Tight bunches of pale pearl-grey buttons; crisp and mildly nutty with a clean, buttery finish. -
Snow White Pleurotus ostreatus
Pure white ruffled fans; the mildest of the four — delicately sweet and silky once cooked.
Both shimeji varieties are bitter raw and need to be cooked through — a few minutes in a hot pan turns that bitterness into a sweet, nutty finish.
What you'll notice
- Pins within days, not months. Blocks arrive fully colonised, so the first tiny mushroom heads usually appear within a few days to a week of opening.
- Up to 500g on the first harvest, per block. Across four blocks that's a genuinely useful amount of gourmet mushrooms — not a novelty handful.
- Up to four flushes. Rest the block for a week after harvest and it goes again. Yields taper with each flush.
- Four different mushrooms, four different dinners. Colour, texture and flavour all shift between varieties, so the same cooking method gives you four distinct results.
- Nothing to buy, nothing to set up. It grows on a kitchen counter or any indoor bench. No tent, no fan, no humidifier, no prior experience.
Why the packs change with the season
Oyster mushrooms fruit in response to temperature, and different species in the Pleurotus genus have evolved to trigger at different points. Pink and Yellow Oysters are subtropical — they need warmth to pin and simply sit dormant when it's cool. Shimeji strains are the opposite, holding back until temperatures drop. Rather than sell you a block that can't fruit in your kitchen, we rotate the line-up so every variety in your box is inside its natural fruiting window for the month it ships.
Growing conditions
Summer Pack
- 20–30°C Temperature — thrives across this range, with 25–28°C ideal. Well suited to a warm Australian kitchen.
- Ambient Light — normal indoor light is plenty. Keep out of direct sunlight.
- 2× daily Humidity — mist the cut face of the block twice a day with the included mister bottle.
Winter Pack
- 15–21°C Temperature — thrives across this range, with 16–18°C ideal. Built for cooler months.
- Ambient Light — normal indoor light is plenty. Keep out of direct sunlight.
- 2× daily Humidity — mist the cut face of the block twice a day with the included mister bottle.
The method, start to finish: unbox and stand each block upright. Open the bag slightly for airflow. Mist lightly once or twice a day and keep out of direct sun. Pins appear within a few days to a week. Harvest by twisting and pulling the whole cluster cleanly at the base, once caps are fully formed but before the edges start to curl upward. Rest the block a week, keep misting, and the next flush follows.
Storage & care
- Before opening: keep blocks sealed, out of direct sun, somewhere cool. Start them within a week or two of arrival for the best first flush.
- After harvest: fresh mushrooms keep 5–7 days in a paper bag in the fridge. Never store them in plastic — they sweat and go slimy.
- Always cook before eating. Oyster mushrooms, and shimeji in particular, are not intended to be eaten raw.
- Mature mushrooms release spores. Harvest before caps flatten and curl to keep spore drop down, and site the farm away from bedrooms if anyone in the house is sensitive to mould or dust.
- Pets: keep blocks and harvested mushrooms out of reach of cats and dogs, and don't let pets graze the block.
- Spent blocks compost beautifully — break them up through the garden or into the compost when they're finished.
What's in the box
- Four fully colonised mushroom blocks — the seasonal line-up above, grown on certified organic pasteurised substrate with our own locally developed spawn.
- Mister bottle — for the twice-daily misting that keeps humidity where the mushrooms want it.
- Detailed printed instructions — pages of guidance covering opening day through to final flush.
- A mushroom book of your choice — pick from children's, cooking, foraging, medicinal, or colouring. Leave your choice in the order notes at checkout and we'll pack it; if you forget, we'll be in touch after your order to confirm.
