No More Tearing at the Hood — Genuine Parafilm M, Pre-Cut and Ready to Seal
Fumbling with a Parafilm roll under a flow hood wastes time and risks contamination. These strips are pre-cut to the perfect 5 cm × 10 cm size in our mycology clean room — under a laminar flow hood — and sealed in a zip-lock bag the moment they're done. Pull a strip, stretch it onto your plate, and move on. Each strip wraps one standard 90–100 mm petri dish cleanly. Available in a 10-strip starter pack or a 20-strip value pack.
The real thing
Genuine Parafilm M — the brand used in research labs and teaching institutions worldwide. Not a grafting tape substitute, not a generic imitation film. Same material your agar techniques and protocols were designed around.
Pre-cut to the right size
5 cm wide × 10 cm long — the established standard for wrapping a 90–100 mm petri dish in a single pass. No measuring, no tearing, no off-cuts to manage. Just grab and go.
Prepared under flow hood
Every strip is cut in our mycology lab on Tamborine Mountain under a laminar flow hood. Particulate load is minimised before the strips reach the zip-lock bag — so the first contamination risk is yours to manage, not ours.
Zip-lock sealed for storage
Strips are packaged immediately into a resealable zip-lock bag. Reseal after each use and they stay clean, flat, and uncontaminated for the full life of the pack.
Gas exchange, not airtight
Parafilm M allows controlled moisture vapour and gas exchange. Your cultures breathe; external contaminants, liquid, and airborne particles are kept out. This is why it has been the culture plate standard for decades.
No adhesive, no residue
Body heat softens the paraffin wax in the film and bonds it to itself on contact. No sticky backing, no adhesive residue on your plates or equipment, and clean removal when you need to access your cultures.
What You Get
- Pre-cut strips measuring exactly 5 cm wide × 10 cm long
- Each strip wraps one standard 90–100 mm petri dish
- Cut and handled under a laminar flow hood in our on-farm mycology lab
- Supplied in a sealed, resealable zip-lock bag
- Genuine Parafilm M — not a substitute or generic lab film
- Available in 10-strip or 20-strip packs
Why Parafilm M is the Mycologist's Default
Parafilm M is a co-extruded film made from polyolefins and paraffin wax. That combination gives it properties no tape or cling film can replicate: it is chemically inert (safe in contact with agar media and live cultures), moisture-vapour permeable (preventing condensation buildup inside sealed plates), and self-bonding under mild heat without adhesive. A stretch seal around a plate perimeter creates a barrier against airborne particles and liquid splash while still allowing the CO2 and O2 exchange that mycelium needs.
It has been the standard in microbiology, cell culture, and clinical labs for over 60 years — and it remains the standard because nothing else does the same job as simply and as reliably.
How to Apply Parafilm M Strips
Take a single strip and immediately reseal the zip-lock bag to keep the remaining strips clean and flat.
Expose the film edge — you don't need to remove the full liner before starting; peel as you go.
Hold the plate in your non-dominant hand and press one end of the strip against the rim with your thumb.
Work around the rim, stretching the film slightly as you go. Body heat activates the bond. Don't over-stretch or the film will tear.
Where the strip meets its starting point, overlap by 1–2 cm and press firmly. The seal is complete.
For plates stored beyond two weeks, or for extra contamination resistance during incubation: fold the strip in half lengthwise before applying. This gives you a two-layer seal around the rim with significantly better mechanical strength. The strip is sized with enough length to still wrap a full 90 mm plate when folded.
Storage & Handling
- Store between 7°C and 32°C at 35–55% relative humidity
- Keep away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture
- Reseal the zip-lock bag immediately after each use
- Not autoclavable — Parafilm M melts under steam sterilisation temperatures
- Not compatible with strong solvents or concentrated acids

From Our Lab on Tamborine Mountain
Kai Kai Farm is a family-run mycology and fermentation operation on Tamborine Mountain in Queensland’s Scenic Rim. We run our own agar lab, produce spawn, grow gourmet mushrooms, and supply restaurants across QLD, NSW and VIC. The lab supplies we sell are the same ones we reach for ourselves — and we prepare them the same way we’d want to receive them.
Pre-cutting Parafilm under the flow hood takes us a bit longer than doing it on the bench. We do it that way because contamination is the enemy of good culture work — and small habits matter. If you have questions about agar technique, plate storage or any other part of your lab work, get in touch. We’re growers, not just suppliers.
