Reishi isn't a mushroom you harvest for dinner. It's a mushroom you grow for something else entirely — a ritual, a practice, a slow relationship with one of the most studied adaptogenic fungi in the world. Our Organic Reishi Mushroom Kit lets you grow your own from the beginning, on your bench, from a fully colonised block made on our Tamborine Mountain farm.
About Reishi — Australia's native strain
Our Reishi is Ganoderma steyaertanum — Australia's own native species, adapted to the subtropical conditions of the Scenic Rim. This is different from the Ganoderma lucidum found in most imported supplements and powders. Growing natively here, it develops in conditions that mirror our local environment — something overseas-grown strains simply can't offer.
Reishi is revered in traditional East Asian medicine as an adaptogen: a substance believed to help the body regulate its response to stress. It's studied for potential immune-modulating, sleep-supporting, and cortisol-regulating properties. It's hard, woody, and deeply bitter — which is why it's traditionally prepared as a slow-simmered tea or double-extracted tincture rather than eaten.
What to expect growing it
Reishi is unlike any other kit in our range. It grows slowly and deliberately — developing distinctive antler-like formations (primordia) before the final cap forms. The fruiting bodies have a stunning lacquered, shelf-like appearance with a rust-red to deep brown surface. Watching one develop from the first pins to a fully formed conk is genuinely one of the more fascinating things you can grow indoors.
Once dried, your Reishi fruiting body will last for months — a beautiful specimen as much as a functional ingredient. Simmer 20–30g of dried material per 500ml of water for 20–25 minutes to make a traditional Reishi tea. The flavour is earthy and bitter, pairing well with honey or ginger.
Growing conditions
Reishi prefers slightly warmer conditions than our oyster kits — ideal fruiting temperature is 22–28°C, making it a good kit for Queensland's warmer months or for indoor growing in a warm spot. It's slower than oysters and requires patience, but that patience is part of the experience.
The Kai Kai Farm difference
Made on our farm in the Tamborine Mountain highlands using our own G. steyaertanum culture and certified organic substrate. Backed by our grow guarantee. If it doesn't fruit, we'll make it right.
