why choose kai kai farm ready to fruit blocks

Commercial performance, without the lab overhead

Every block is prepared, sterilised, and colonised right here at our Tamborine Mountain farm — using the exact same methods we rely on for our own commercial gourmet mushroom production.

  • 🌱 Fresh from the source

Pulled directly from our farm's controlled environment — never aged in a warehouse. Blocks arrive at peak vigour with the highest possible fruiting potential.

    Never stockpiled

  • 🧪 Verified contamination free

Each batch is monitored through full colonisation. White, dense, and uniform mycelium is our baseline — only blocks that pass visual and performance checks ship out.

    Quality Control

  • 📦 High Yield Substrates

Our nutrient-balanced blend of Australian-grown agricultural inputs — hardwood, supplemented with non-GMO soy hull or organic wheat bran — is designed specifically for consistent, heavy fruiting.

    Locally sourced inputs

  • 🔄 Multiple flush performance

Most blocks reliably produce 3–5 flushes before the substrate is exhausted. Soaking the block between flushes extends output and maintains moisture levels.

  • 🚚 Express post recommended

We strongly recommend adding the Express Post Addon so your blocks arrive fast and fresh via AusPost. Shorter transit time means healthier mycelium on arrival.

Simple to operate

From delivery to first harvest

No lab, no steriliser, no guesswork. Your block arrives fully colonised and ready to trigger into fruiting.

1

Receive your block

Arrives white, dense, and fully colonised. Inspect for vigour — firm blocks with even white coverage are ready to go.

2

Prepare the bag

Oysters/Pioppino: cut an X-slit on the long side. Lion's Mane: vertical slit. Reishi: grow in bag as antlers or cut horizontal slits for brackets.

3

Set up your environment

Place in a humid spot — grow tent, greenhouse, or shaded area. Mist daily. Maintain airflow to encourage healthy pin formation.

4

First pins in 4–7 days

Small primordia will appear at your cut site. Continue misting and watch them develop over the following days.

5

Harvest & reflush

Harvest when caps just start to turn upward or show spores. Soak the block overnight, then repeat for the next flush.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Collapsible content

How long does it take from order to first harvest?

Single blocks (1–3) are typically dispatched within a few days.

For orders of 4 or more blocks of an individual variety, allow 2–4 weeks as these are made to order to ensure maximum freshness.

Once you receive the block, expect first pins in 4–7 days under good conditions.

Do I need special equipment to fruit the blocks?

Not necessarily. A shaded, humid area with good airflow will work.

For best commercial results we recommend a grow tent or fruiting chamber where you can control humidity (80–95% RH) and airflow.

A hand mister is sufficient for small runs; automated misting systems improve consistency at scale.

Why is express post recommended?

Mushroom mycelium is a living organism. Extended time in transit — especially in warm Australian conditions — can stress or damage the colonised block. Express post minimises exposure to heat and dramatically improves the condition of blocks on arrival. Add the Express Post Addon product with a matching quantity when ordering.

How many flushes can I expect?

Most commercial blocks produce 2–5 flushes. The first flush is the largest, as the substrate is at its most nutrient-dense. Subsequent flushes reduce in size. Soaking the block overnight between flushes and maintaining consistent humidity helps maximise total yield.

Can I store the block if I'm not ready to fruit it immediately?

Yes. Unopened blocks can be held at cool room temperature (16–20°C) for a short period, or refrigerated at 4–8°C to slow metabolic activity. Do not refrigerate Pink Oyster blocks below 10°C. For best results, begin fruiting as soon as possible after receiving your order.

What is the minimum order for bulk pricing?

Bulk pricing applies to orders of 10 or more blocks. Mix and match varieties to reach the bulk threshold. For very large or ongoing commercial orders, contact us directly at hello@kaikaifarm.au to discuss volume arrangements and scheduling.

My block has some green or black patches, is it ruined?

Green or black patches typically indicate Trichoderma or other mould contamination. This can occur if a bag seal is compromised in transit. Isolated spots on the outside of the bag don't necessarily mean the interior is affected, but if the contamination has penetrated or spreads, it's best to remove the block from your fruiting area to prevent cross-contamination. Email us with a photo and we'll advise.

Do you offer pick up from the farm?

Yes — local pickup is available from our farm at 654 Main Western Rd, Tamborine Mountain QLD. Mon–Fri 9AM–3PM (closed Tuesday). Pickup avoids shipping costs and means your blocks arrive in the absolute freshest condition. Confirm availability by contacting us before visiting

What temperature do the blocks prefer when fruiting?

Temperature needs vary by species: Oyster mushrooms fruit well between 16–24°C; Lion's Mane prefers slightly cooler conditions at 18–22°C; Pioppino fruits best at 10–18°C and benefits from a cold shock; Reishi tolerates warmer growing at 22–28°C. Pink Oyster should never go below 10°C.

Can spent blocks be used after fruiting is complete?

Absolutely. Spent substrate is excellent for garden beds and compost. The Tasmanian oak-based substrate is fully colonised with beneficial mycelium which helps build soil structure and feeds soil biology. We even sell spent blocks separately as a garden amendment — earthworms love them.
